The issue

One of our clients, a global managed service provider was looking to remove the need for its large, distributed workforce to have to visit the office every time a PC rebuild, or device replacement was needed.
They needed a way to enable employees to configure the custom workspace builds remotely and securely without the need for individuals to have administration access.

The Solution

Expertware worked with the internal IT department of the customer to create multiple scripts that could be run from a secure web site triggering configuration and start-up scripts which would take any standard windows build, such as that found on a new device, perform the out of the box process and tailor the build to the clients’ specific requirements.
Access to the scripts was achieved through one-time single use passwords with local administration passwords never being disclosed to the employee. Pre-configured VPNs installed by the scripts allowed for domain membership to be established and options allowed specific software to be installed as part of the setup.

The Result

Following rigorous testing the solution was piloted within the business and then rolled out for general use.
The processes for device fulfilment and service desk rebuilds were altered to remove the need for employees to visit an IT location. A complete setup of a new device was achieved remotely in under 20 minutes meaning that employees could be sent new devices direct from the manufacturer and be up and running almost as soon as the device was delivered.
Multiple scripts were eventually used to tailor builds to specific user groups.
The customer was able to save considerable time and travel costs, new hires were productive far more quickly, and issues such as the pandemic became far easier to cope with.
